Behind the Scenes Vlog: Truth bombs about English Pronunciation Practice

I can’t remember the time before I started practising.

I’ve been practising daily since age 10.

Anything before that feels quite blurry.

It all began with my soul’s alignment to music.

Music lessons began when I was young. I was very obedient so practised without thought.

Growing up without television as a kid probably helped.

I’d practise for hours on end in my bedroom.

In my head, as a kid, I always thought I needed to practise more. But apparently all I had to hear was: “You’ve not practised today, Sarah” and off I’d go to my room and get it done.

What sent me to my room diligently?

At first guilt.

Somehow, I knew if I didn’t practise I’d never make it. Even at age 10, I had a big fear of being half baked.

But now, nearly 30 years later, what keeps me practising? I mean, I made it. I got myself an elite classical voice from years of work. My career path wasn’t what I’d predicted but I won’t deny my world-class mastery of opera singing. I really became the operatic soprano I’d dreamed of as a small kid.

What keeps me going is the urge to master and overcome any barriers that hold back my ability to express myself on stage.

But how does this relate to your English pronunciation practice & speaking?

In my job as a speech pathologist, I can’t help but see the performance anxiety that my clients who are working on pronunciation clarification face daily.

It’s really holding people back, the fear of expressing oneself freely in a second language.

And guess what?

It’s so close to stage-fright.

I’ve experienced both!

But there’s a way to solve that horrid feeling which can overtake you and stop you showing up.

You must practise.

Because here’s the thing you need to know from someone who’s practised for 1000’s of hours, the same thing to near perfection.

I didn’t become an opera singer from singing on stage. I became an opera singer from mastering my mindset and identity in the practice zone.

And you, well you’ll become a confident unstoppable speaker of English if you only give yourself a chance and devote some time to practice.

Today you are getting a really fortunate look into my private practice life.

Performers don’t usually let people inside because it’s so close to all our insecurities. This is the zone where we fight our demons (the fear of being a phoney or not good enough) but out of it, we rise victorious.

Today I’m sharing it with you because I want you to learn what practice really is. It’s a ritual and a habit. Once you learn that, you can start.

Go practise.

Actually, go watch this, then practise!
