FAQ
What's a Speech & Language Pathologist?
Please don't feel shy to ask or not know! There is no such thing as a silly question.
Speech & Language Pathology is a medical profession that addresses all aspects of how humans communicate over the lifespan.
Speech pathology is a branch of allied health science. As such, we're in the same career family as psychologists, physiotherapists, dieticians, occupational therapists and...
just like these fields, speech pathologists don't only work with children.
Our voice focused consulting at VOICE SCIENCE draws on various disciplines of science such as acoustics, physics and communication science research.
Voice Therapy Solutions
Speech pathologists apply clinical assessment and intervention to provide practical strategies for their clients.
We are trained extensively in the neurology (in particular how the brain processes and plans language, speech sounds, social communication, voice and swallowing), anatomy (for head and neck), physiology (for neurological language processing, voice production, speech movements, swallowing) as well as research methods, clinical training and so many other things!

How long will it take for me to notice changes and improvements with my voice?
Adjusting communication behaviours and patterns of speaking is a process. How long it takes for you to notice change in your general communication depends on a few factors:
1) How consistently you attend and apply the protocols we give you.
2) Practice. One of the key predictors of speech change is how effectively and frequently you practice and appraise your communication and voice goals. At Voice Science, we will support you in developing a clear understanding of how to practice. This is one of our key interests for any client who commences training at Voice Science, especially since research evidence supports the impact of regular, drill-based practise on speech and language change outcomes. We will create individual practice goals with you that are strategic.
3) Your voice muscle condition. Depending on the state of your voice muscle when we first conduct your audit, sessions may range between 5 – 15 sessions.
Can I receive private health care rebates for these sessions?
Speech Pathology is covered by Private Health funds for diagnosable medical disorders and communication disorders such as stuttering, voice disorders and neurological impairments.
The Diagnostic Voice Assessment will identify whether you have a clinical voice condition that would allow us to include the Private health codes on your invoicing.
Our clinicians are registered Australian service providers for Private Health Insurers so we can bill item numbers accordingly if you have private health cover that includes Speech Pathology services.
We recommend you check directly with your private health fund to determine whether you have cover for speech pathology and are based in Australia. You will not be able to receive private health cover if you don’t live in Australia but are very welcome to do one of our programs.
Can I receive a Medicare rebate for my Voice Therapy Sessions?
Medicare may be available if you’re based in Australia. To receive a rebate from the first assessment you will need to present 1) GP referral letter 2) A Chronic Disease Management plan created by your GP.
For speech pathology services to be rebatable with private health insurers or medicare, they must be billed according to medical/ chronic speech pathology conditions under specific legal codes. These codes are given under clinical authority and as medical professionals, we must apply codes only in light of a clinical diagnosis. It is up to the clinician’s judgement whether these codes can be applied and codes will only be available where a clinical voice disorder has been identified.
